Marisa - Fire Emblem by FireLilyCosplay Marisa - Fire Emblem by FireLilyCosplay
So, just to continue my Fire Emblem kick, I decided to cosplay Marisa, the great swordmaster. A native of Jehanna (I think I'm seeing a trend here!), she is known as the Crimson Flash for her great speed. Marisa seeks to surpass her father, who was also a great swordmaster, and joins Gerik's Mercenaries in the great war with Grado.

I really didn't think too much of Marisa during the game, other than she was my best sword fighter. However, when Nintendo came out with their official artwork for the Fire Emblem Museum, I fell in love with her design. Saucy little thing, she is ^.^ The dress was made from a purple faux-velour with red bias tape and button detailing. The collars were freehanded, as was the skirt wrap. The wrap is white voile and is decorated with gold thread satin stitching and gold fabric paint. The fingerless gloves are red jersey knit. The boot covers are made from brick red microsuede, red bias tape, gold buttons and gold vinyl. I added the buttons for closure as the picture doesn't actually show the front detail of the boots themselves. The armbands are craft foam painted brown and decorated with gold vinyl and jewels. I purchased the multicolored wig from Ebay (a fabulous find!) and styled it.

The sword was a first for me. I had never worked with insulation foam before, but it was rather easy to carve out and shape. I coated it with paper mache and gesso, but due to the wacky weather this summer, it didn't dry properly and had a few rough spots. Next time I'll just let it dry inside ^.^ Anyway, I think this costume turned out very well and I'm really happy with it!

Man, there's no cosplayers that hold the sword in the left hand... Marissa's ambidextrous but prefers the left hand.

Does that seriously even matter?  It's a costume, lol...

Well, it doesn't matter. I think it's a great cosplay, and I added it to my favorites (maybe I should have said I think it's a great cosplay now that I think about it). It was a side observation because I look at every detail in everything, that is all. No need to feel attacked.

If you don't mind my saying so, you're absolutely beautiful as her. I never thought Marisa that cute by the ingame sprite, but I think it's cause it made her hair look a little messy. The artwork of her was better though :P Very good work ^^

I think I sometimes make her an assassin while Joshua becomes a swordmaster. Either way, both do a great job of pounding everyone into submission :P

Awesome! You carry that outfit perfectly. It inspires me to get another sewing machine and get busy. x) Very nice job on the sword, too! Perhaps it's the camera distance but I can't tell very well that it's a replica sword made from foam. Perhaps I should start making cosplay swords since I am after all a blacksmith. I studied Katana Kaji under a registered swordsmith for a short while when I lived in Japan so I know a great deal about forging swords. Haha, I doubt they would let someone into a convention with a real Cloud Strife Buster sword though.

Yes, I ramble occasionally to random people. =)

Anyway, nicely done indeed!

Thank you!! It was my first time using insulation foam, so I guess I didn't do too poorly ^.^ And if you have the time, there is a big market for replica swords and lots of people buy them!

I'd probably just end up doing it for myself. x) I never cared about making money off my work even in the slightest. I'm the kinda guy that would spend a month working on a piece and I'd just end up giving it to a friend of mine or just destroying it. Kinda like the time during last autumn I made a huge pile of leaves and some little kid and his dad came walking past. The kids expression lit up and you could just tell he wanted to jump in. So I let him have it. lol

Out of all things, I would actually have to say my favourite bit here is the wig. More often than not, wigs end up being painfully obvious- whereas here it actually looks like your real hair.

And of course the rest of your outfit is nothing to sneeze at, either. My only quirk really would be that you look too serene, whilst Marisa is considerably more awkward in social environments. XD

Very nice. One of the better cosplays that I have seen. And more Fire Emblem definitely doesn't hurt. ;)

I love that you made a Shamshir as the cosplay weapon. That was totally Marissa's best weapon.

OMG! This is bloody awesome! Any tips on how to make the costume (specificly the boots and the shamshir)? My girlfriend and I want to do a Marisa/Tana cosplay and I can't sew to save my life.

You can use these tutorials for making boot covers:

And for the sword, I carved it out of insulation foam, shaped it using a hot knife, coated it with paper mache and gesso, and sanded till smooth.

I've been sewing for a while, so I can alter and freehand patterns pretty easily. Just find a pattern close enough to the dress and fit it as best you can. Use a muslin (test garment) before using your good fabric if you aren't comfortable fitting and altering on the fly.
